One may prefer the traditional white background and another nay not. For me this is simply an unnecessary thing. I prefer the plain and simple white background. But from the perspective of Google, they serve both.... And I 've never heard of people who set their home page to a search engine not to search but only for having some pics on it. They're simply giving you an option, not forcing you. There many among us who have made Bing their homepages coz they like to see a nice picture showing when they open the browser. But, yes, they have taken the concept from Bing, but copying the good things of others ain't bad at all. If you want the simple homepage you can simply neglect this.
