@sasindu: Yes, I agree that there may be people who'll like Google offering them the option to have a custom background. But the problem then arises is, why don't Google support these background images in search results page? As I mentioned in the post, it is very annoying that the background image is gone when we click the search buttons. It hurts the eyes. And Google hasn't announced that whether they'll support background images in search results page or not.

[said:sasindu]
And I ‘ve never heard of people who set their home page to a search engine not to search but only for having some pics on it.
[/said]

Yes, that is unbelievable for me too. But who knows, people are different. :D

I think this background thing won't do any bad to Google Search since millions of different people around the world with different preferences use Google Search everyday. One may prefer the traditional white background and another nay not. For me this is simply an unnecessary thing. I prefer the plain and simple white background. But from the perspective of Google, they serve both....

[said: budhajeewa] OMG! Is this true? :O [/said]
Yes, I have many friends doing this. They don't search from Bing, just the homepage.

@Thameera: Yes, it is good that this is just an option. But I don't name this as a "good thing"!

[said:Thameera]There many among us who have made Bing their homepages coz they like to see a nice picture showing when they open the browser.[/said]

I don't see a bad aspect in this at all. They're simply giving you an option, not forcing you. There many among us who have made Bing their homepages coz they like to see a nice picture showing when they open the browser.
But, yes, they have taken the concept from Bing, but copying the good things of others ain't bad at all.
If you want the simple homepage you can simply neglect this.
