Reporting Facebook Organization Impersonators

Fake IdentityIt is a huge headache for me when I see Personal Facebook Profiles that represent organizations. Some of these profiles are the results of the less knowledge of those organizations’ social media person, others are created by some random people. Either way, here is what we should do:

Thanks for illustrating steps to report fake profiles. I went through the same process months ago since I found someone behave suspiciously. Well, I don't know how Facebook deal with this kind of stuff behind the door. But, I know that person is still acting out.

Thanks for mentioning and informing about this. At Facebook, that is being very headache like you said at your post ..

  4. Jeroen says:

Nice manual on how to report a fake FB profile! Very practical and I agree that people doing that should be removed from a platform like FB.

I personally don't have a problem with this until they start posting utter crap. What I do have a problem with is all the 'casual racism' and 'sexism' that people seem to find hilarious. People create groups for this and share such posts. It's illegal and they don't even get banned?

Unfortunately the theft our online identity is a concern

I'm not sure I understand why facebook distinguishes this way. I know it makes it hard for some..

  8. tpr2 says:

ha I wasn't even aware that you could do that thank you

  9. Facebook has become a complicated monolith we are grappling with on a daily basis. As for me, if anything online is too complicated, I move on in the blink of an eye.

That's very true, there's a whole lot of them around that I encounter. Thanks for sharing this valuable info. More power to you!

I just had a bad experience on Facebook today. A person who is "friends" with a lot of my friends. Here is the post that I did about it. http://www.facebook.com/sallylovesanimals/posts/1…

"I just had a weird thing happen. A person (Barry Smile Grace) with a lot of mutual Facebook friends asked me to be a friend. I accepted. Then she (?) sent me an instant message saying that she worked for Facebook and that Mark Zucherburg was giving me money for disabled people. I looked at her profile and it said that she was unemployed in Baltimore MD. When I asked her about it she said that she is in marketing and has a lot of profiles! I blocked her. Since she is friends with a bunch of people I know, I thought I would mention it."

This is a very interesting blog with a very good suggestion for dealing with Facebook Pages that are impersonating an organization or is just plain fake. I think there are lots of issues for why this type of fakery is happening. As you mentioned, there are people who claim to be social media experts who really don't have a clue how to set up Facebook Pages in an authentic way. I never knew there was a way to deal with this before reading your blog so I really appreciate the option to respond in a new way. Thank you for outlining all the steps completely and for providing new food for thought on Facebook.

Thank you for sharing this information with everyone!

  17. Tom Laing says:

Haaven't need to use this. There are always people around pretendin to be someone else so it would figure that there are similar things going on for organisations too. Facebook makes it pretty easy to do this doesn't it?

  18. Liz says:

I'm not sure why this bothers you so much.

  19. ImRover says:

Nice Illustration Via step by step approach but I don't think I'll be using it coz i hate blocking anyone even if it's fake!

  20. MightyCasey says:

I've long been suspicious of any personal profile that purported to be, say, Val Kilmer. The actual person behind the real celebrity – i.e. Val Kilmer himself – would not be putting up a personal profile on Facebook. Trust me on that one. Brand page, yes. Profile? Hell to the no. So if Lady Gaga send you a friend request, you can be pretty sure that it's some loser in a basement somewhere brandjacking. Just sayin'.

  21. I really did not know and it never occurred to me to report these accounts. something to be on the lookout for. TKS

  22. What are the FB rules on this anyway?

  23. Alex Zmushka says:

I guess it's good to know those steps but until the profile doesn't have any threats or any other issues for visitors, I wouldn't even bother waste my time. Anyways, thanks for sharing.

  24. ronromero says:

I had wondered how this was done. Nice step by step instructions.
