In WordPress 3.0 – latest available version – there are 2 modes available for the user to run it. “Single Site Mode” and “Multi Site Mode”.
In “Single Site Mode”, you have one site and the admin-panel associated with it.
In “Multi Site Mode”, you have many sites and many admin-panels, one admin-panel associated with each site.
Before WordPress merged its two branches – WordPress and WordPress MU – in WordPress 3.0, I used WordPress MU to maintain my personal website, this blog and the Microblog with one installation of WordPress. I really loved WordPress MU and the decision WordPress took to merge the two branches.
But what I hate about “Multi Site Mode” in WordPress 3.0 is – this was the same in WordPress MU -, I have to active plugins and themes, set time-zone, set permalink style etc for each newly created site from the beginning!
I imagined a solution for this, and it is “Site Groups”!
Site Groups
By the term “Site Group”, I mean an entity, which contain more than one site under it. Changing settings of a “Site Group”, will affect all the sites assigned to that particular “Site Group”.
These settings can be enabling plugins and themes, time zone, permalink style, etc.
Although a site is assigned to a “Site Group”, it should be possible to change those setting in each site’s “personal” admin panel again, without effecting any other site in the group.
This is my simple little suggestion, hope WordPress developers would notice this.
