MK808 Android TV
MK808 Android TV was the latest addition to my gadget collection. Connecting to your TV through a HDMI port, it makes your regular TV a smart one.
This device sports
- a Rockchip RK3066 1.6Ghz Cortex A9 Dual Core processor
- Quad Core Mali400 GPU
- 1GB RAM
- 4GB Storage
- SD Card Slot
- Mini USB port, to which you can plug the included USB OTG cable
- Standard USB port, to which you can plug in various devices, including external hard disks
- HDMI port, to connect the device to a disaplay
Once I connected the device to my TV, I realized that this beast with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in it, is an speedy monster.
I am very satisfied with the WiFi reception as well. My TV is located a considerable distance from my WiFi hotspot, so much that my Sony Xperia P can hardly load a web page with it. But thanks to MK808’s dual WiFi antenna setup, I am able to load web pages and install apps very fast.
The device has some Chinese (or Japanese, or something with similar letters) bloatware when it is fresh out of the box. But I managed to root it using the guidelines in the following page:

Anyway, MK808 has some downsides as well. Whenever I turn the device off and turn it back on, the system date and time is reset. I guess this is because this device doesn’t have any battery. You have to set the correct time zone you belong to in your device, and then have date and time auto sync through Internet. That way, MK808 will automatically correct the date and time once it is connected to Internet.
Bluetooth isn’t supported either.
I give this device the score of 4.5 out of 5.

So around 50 $US? that sounds really good. Wonder if I could get away without a £150 TV license in the UK?
Although the product’s name says “Android TV”, it isn’t a TV itself. It is just a gadget that can be connected to your existing TV through a HDMI port. So I don’t think there will be an issue with tax.
I’m satisfied with the quality of your review, very fair. I’m sort of hankering for this item now, though!

touch screen TV + this + total WIN
I am not really sure whether this would be able to work with a touch screen. Because I don’t think the touch signal would be sent to the device through HDMI cable, which is the only way this is connected to TV.
However, I have seen a “touch screen” project screen back in my high school, which sends out the touch signal to the computer through a USB cable. If we find a TV – or any other screen – that sends out touch signal through a USB cable to the host device, we’d be able to hook that up to MK808’s USB interface, and see what happens.

It seems so. But I’d have to use this device for couple of months more to see for real.
